The origin of the name McCool

The surname McCool is a deeply rooted northern Irish and Scottish name that carries a dual legacy of religious devotion and heroic mythology.

Most commonly, it originates in County Donegal as a phonetic contraction of the ancient Gaelic Mac Giolla Comhghaill, meaning "son of the servant of Saint Comhghall" (a revered 6th-century Irish monk). Over centuries of spoken dialect, the tongue-twisting original name naturally compressed into McCool, McCole, and Coyle.

Concurrently, the name derives from Mac Cumhaill, meaning "son of the champion." This directly connects the surname to Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool), the legendary warrior-giant of Irish folklore who famously shaped the Giant's Causeway. In some parts of Ulster, it also evolved as a soft phonetic variation of Mac Dhubhghaill ("son of the dark stranger"), a term used for early Danish Viking settlers.

The symbolism of the McCool family crest

Artist’s note
While researching the McCool coat of arms I found no reference to it in the National Library of Ireland or in Burke's Armorial listings, however it is typical of the grand style of the Victorian era. During the 19th-century heraldic revival, many families commissioned family crests to celebrate their ancestral folklore and I suspect the earlier versions of this design that I used as a reference are from that period. My rendition of both the bull and the dragon are particularly detailed if you zoom in—my way of doing homage to the tradition.
