The origin of the name Matthews

Matthews (Mathew / Mathew of Llandaff) is an ancient Welsh and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Matthew" (derived from the biblical Hebrew name Mattanyah, meaning "gift of God"). The premier Welsh lineage traces direct descent from Gwaethfoed, Prince of Ceredigion, establishing their ancestral seat at Llandaff and Castell-y-Mynach in Glamorgan. Serving as Grand Standard Bearers to the English Crown, High Sheriffs, and Parliamentarians, the family exerted major influence across South Wales and the West Country.

The symbolism of the Matthews coat of arms

Commanding and chivalric, the Matthews coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central black lion rampant. In classical Welsh heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the black lion rampant represents supreme bravery, deep wisdom, dignity, and unyielding constancy under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden rooster (cock)—an emblem of acute vigilance, early morning alertness, and courageous spirit. Below, the motto scroll displays Y fyn Duw a fydd, translating from Welsh to "What God wills will be." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s 16th-century Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
