The origin of the name Mason
Mason is an ancient English and Scottish occupational and status surname derived from Old French maçon (meaning "stone-mason" or "master builder"). Originating with master craftsmen who constructed medieval cathedrals, castles, and civic fortresses, families bearing the name established respected manorial seats across Warwickshire (Stratford-upon-Avon), Kent, and Scotland. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (John le Mason).
The symbolism of the Mason coat of arms
Commanding and mythic, the Mason coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central deep blue lion rampant. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and high standing, while the deep blue lion represents loyalty, truth, supreme courage, and heroic leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a mermaid holding a golden mirror in her right hand and a golden comb in her left—an ancient emblem of eloquence, maritime guardianship, self-knowledge, and the attraction of good fortune. Below, the motto scroll displays Dum spiro spero, translating to "While I breathe, I hope." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Warwickshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
