The origin of the name Marquez

Marquez (Márquez) is an ancient Spanish patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Marcos" (derived from the Latin personal name Marcus, associated with Mars, the Roman god of war). Originating during the early Reconquista in the northern mountain kingdoms of Castile and Asturias, the House of Márquez expanded across Andalusia, the Canary Islands, and the Americas, producing royal magistrates, military commanders, and literary figures.

The symbolism of the Marquez coat of arms

Visually bold and geometric, the Marquez coat of arms features a field divided diagonally into alternating stripes (bendy) of red and deep blue, partitioned by thin golden lines. In classical heraldry, the alternating diagonal bends represent knightly sashes of honor, strategic balance, and structural integrity. The red stripes symbolise martial courage and sacrifice, while the deep blue stripes denote loyalty, truth, and faith. The golden partitions represent generosity and royal favor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and red feathers, representing noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian armorial rolls and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Doña Isabel Márquez (17th Century): Spanish gentlewoman recorded in Seville land charters.
Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014): World-renowned Colombian author, journalist, and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
