The origin of the name Mahon
Mahon (O'Mahon / MacMahon) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Mocháin or Mac Mathghamhna (meaning "bear" or "descendant of Mochán"). Establishing influential septs in Connacht (Galway and Sligo) and Munster (Clare), the family produced hereditary clerics, clan chieftains, and High Sheriffs. Elevated to the peerage as Barons Hartland of Strokestown House (County Roscommon), the House of Mahon played a prominent role in Irish political and military history.
The symbolism of the Mahon coat of arms
Commanding and luminous, the Mahon coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central deep blue lion rampant. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the deep blue lion represents loyalty, truth, supreme bravery, and heroic spirit. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. Below, the motto scroll displays Buaidh go bragh, translating from Irish Gaelic to "Victory forever." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
