The origin of the name Maguire

Maguire (Mág Uidhir) is one of the most celebrated royal Gaelic Irish clan surnames, derived from Mág Uidhir (meaning "son of Donn Uidhir," or "the dun-coloured one"). Ruling as sovereign Princes and Chieftains of Fermanagh from the 13th to the 17th century, the Maguires held supreme lordship over Lough Erne from their royal stronghold at Enniskillen Castle. Renowned for their vast fleets, cavalry, and patronage of Gaelic bards, the clan's history is recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.

The symbolism of the Maguire coat of arms

Heroic and chivalric, the Maguire coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a knight in full steel armor riding a white horse rearing, holding a silver sword erect and bearing a shield charged with a red stag's head. In Gaelic heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in Irish soil. The mounted knight represents supreme bravery, warrior leadership, and armed defense of the Fermanagh kingdom. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red stag with golden antlers standing, chained with a golden collar—symbolising forest lordship, high nobility, and strength restrained by honor. Below, the motto scroll displays Justitia et fortitudo invincibilia sunt, translating to "Justice and fortitude are invincible." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
