Sláinte!

There are two distinct MacLoughlin family crests (both on this site). This one is from Meath and the other from Donegal.

The symbolism of the MacLoughlin family crest

This Kingdom of Meath version of the MacLoughlin coat of arms features an intricate shield divided into a split top half and a wavy, water-filled lower half. The upper left section displays a white background with three upright red hands cut cleanly at the wrist, while the upper right section features a matching red rearing lion. The entire lower half is filled with alternating wavy bands of blue and white upon which a single silver salmon is shown swimming horizontally.

The three red hands carry a deeply revered backstory, serving as a direct variation of the legendary Red Hand of Ulster. In early Irish lore, this emblem was the ultimate symbol of the right to rule, representing absolute tribal dominance and a binding oath to protect the northern province. The Salmon of Knowledge in the lower half is the ultimate celtic symbol of wisdom and also a key feature in a story every Irish child learns at school. The motto: 'Cuimhnigh ar do gheallamhnacha' is Gaelic for 'Remember your promises'.

The origin story of the MacLoughlin name

The Meath branch of the MacLoughlin name belongs to an ancient royal lineage originally known as the Ó Maoilsheachlainn (O’Melaghlin) sept. This patronymic name means "descendant of the devotee of Saint Seachlann," the legendary nephew and companion of Saint Patrick. As the absolute rulers of the Kingdom of Meath (the Southern Uí Néill), this powerful clan dominated the fertile central plains of Ireland. Their lineage was famously anchored by Malachy II, who ruled as High King of Ireland from 980 to 1002 and led formidable campaigns against the Dublin Vikings.

However, centuries of English encroachment systematically dismantled the dynasty's power. Leading authority Dr. Edward MacLysaght (Irish Families: Their Names, Arms and Origins) notes that by the late 17th century—following the devastating Williamite Wars and the introduction of the repressive Penal Laws—the family was entirely dispossessed of its ancestral lands. In a deliberate strategy for survival, the remnants of the royal bloodline discarded the "O'" prefix and adopted the more common anglicized surname MacLoughlin. This phonetic shift effectively blurred their identity with the completely unrelated Donegal clan, allowing them to evade political persecution and safely blend into post-medieval Irish society.
