The origin of the name Lyons

Lyons is the primary historical spelling variant of the noble surname Lyon (Clan Lyon / de Lyons). Sharing identical ancestral origins, the lineage held Glamis Castle in Scotland as Earls of Strathmore and established influential landed branches across Ireland (County Westmeath and Cork) and England. Members of the House of Lyons served as High Sheriffs, naval admirals, and diplomats across the British Isles and Commonwealth.

The symbolism of the Lyons coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral bearings of the noble Clan Lyon lineage, the Lyons coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron powdered with black ermine spots, set between three seated golden lions (lions sejant). In heraldry, the black field denotes deep wisdom and constancy, while the silver ermine chevron symbolises judicial purity and architectural protection. The three golden lions sejant represent composed majesty, heroic strength, and noble authority across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden lion's head erased issuing out of a red cap of maintenance, representing baronial honor, bravery, and royal favor. Below, the motto scroll displays Noli irritare leones, translating to "Do not provoke the lions." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Scottish and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Sir Joseph Lyons (1857–1917): British entrepreneur, civic leader, and philanthropist.
Lady Mary Lyons (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Westmeath estate rolls.
Edmund Lyons, 1st Baron Lyons (1790–1858): Famed Royal Navy Admiral and diplomat during the Crimean War.
