The origin of the name Luna

Luna (de Luna) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the town and manor of Luna in Zaragoza, Aragon. The House of Luna was one of the premier royal and aristocratic families of the Kingdom of Aragon, ruling vast territories as Counts of Morata, Constables of Castile, and Lords of Biscay. Playing a dominant role in medieval Iberian and Papal history, members of the dynasty served as Queen Consorts, Archbishops, and Regents.

The symbolism of the Luna coat of arms

Visually striking and celestial, the Luna coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess: the upper red section is charged with a golden crescent moon, set above a lower section divided into a golden and black checkered pattern (chequy). In Spanish heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage and sacrifice, while the golden crescent moon (luna) serves as an iconic canting emblem representing enlightenment, hopeful renewal, and noble elevation. The golden and black checkered pattern denotes strategic wisdom, architectural balance, and steadfastness under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a crowned black eagle displayed with spread wings, symbolising imperial dignity, high vision, and royal protection. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Aragonese grandee rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
