The origin of the name Lucas
Lucas is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English personal name and surname derived from the Latin personal name Lucas (from Greek Loukas, meaning "man from Lucania" or "luminous/light-bearer"). Introduced to Britain following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Lucas established prominent manorial seats across Essex (Colchester Abbey / Shenfield), Suffolk, and Kent. Elevated to the peerage as Barons Lucas of Shenfield, members of the family served as High Sheriffs, Royalist commanders, and Privy Councillors. Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (William Lucas).
The symbolism of the Lucas coat of arms
Visually pure and geometric, the Lucas coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central red horizontal band (fess) set between six red annulets or rings (three in chief, three in base arranged two and one). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the red fess represents knightly sashes of honor, martial fortitude, and sacrifice. The six red annulets denote unyielding fidelity, continuity, infinity, and noble alignment across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red griffin's head or demi-griffin erased, symbolising acute vigilance, high intellect, and armed readiness. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Essex and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
