The origin of the name Lowe

Lowe is an ancient English topographic and descriptive surname derived from Old English hlaw (meaning "mound," "hill," or "promontory") or Middle English loue ("wolf"). Originating in Derbyshire (Denby Hall), Worcestershire, and Shropshire, the House of Lowe held respected manorial estates following the 1066 Norman Conquest, producing High Sheriffs, Privy Councillors, and military governors. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Huntingdonshire (Robert le Lowe).

The symbolism of the Lowe coat of arms

Commanding and chivalric, the Lowe coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a broad black diagonal band (bend) bearing three golden griffin heads erased. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, high honor, and elevation of mind, while the black bend represents knightly sashes, deep wisdom, and constancy under trial. The three golden griffin heads signify acute alertness, fierce vigilance, high intellect, and guardian strength over family lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden griffin rampant, reinforcing guardian power and martial courage. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Derbyshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
