The origin of the name Love
Love is an ancient English and Scottish surname with deep historical roots, originating either from the Old English personal name Lufu (meaning "affection" or "love") or the Anglo-Norman Louve (from the Old French loup, meaning "wolf"). Established shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066, early ancestral seats were recorded across Oxfordshire, Kent, Hampshire, and Ayrshire. Historical documents cite Alan le Louf in the 1273 Rotuli Hundredorum (Hundred Rolls) of Oxfordshire, as well as Thomas Love in 14th-century Scottish land charters, where family branches held manorial estates under the patronage of the Earls of Douglas.
The symbolism of the Love coat of arms
The Love coat of arms displays a vibrant vert (green) shield charged with a striking or (gold) lion rampant regardant. In classical heraldry, vert symbolizes hope, vitality, renewal, and loyal devotion to realm and family, while or (gold) denotes elevation of mind, generosity, and noble intellect.
The single golden lion rampant regardant (a lion standing on its hind legs but looking backward over its shoulder) is a deeply specific heraldic emblem. It represents majestic strength combined with cautious vigilance. This backward-looking posture symbolizes a wise protector who is never caught off guard, always keeping a watchful eye to defend the family, followers, and lineage trailing behind them.
Positioned directly above the shield and framed by fluid green and gold mantling, the crest features a red cross pattée (formée) upon which stands a bird (rendered in azure and silver). The red cross signifies unshakeable faith, military fortitude, and sacrifice, while the bird symbolizes swiftness, good tidings, freedom, and divine guidance. This ancient blazon is officially recorded in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory and historic English Heralds' Visitations.
