The origin of the name Loughlin
Loughlin (O'Loughlin / MacLoughlin) is an ancient royal Gaelic Irish clan surname derived from Ó Lochlainn (meaning "descendant of Lochlann," the Gaelic term for Scandinavia or "land of fjords"). Ruling as Chieftains of Corcomroe in northern County Clare and as High Kings of Ireland from the royal Uí Néill dynasty of Innishowen (Donegal), the family produced legendary monarchs, military leaders, and patrons of Irish monastic learning. Recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The symbolism of the Loughlin coat of arms
Visually complex and martial, the Loughlin coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess: the upper deep blue section is charged with a golden lion rampant set between two upright argent / silver or white steel swords; the lower red section bears three silver crescents (two in chief, one in base). In Gaelic heraldry, the blue chief and golden lion symbolise loyalty, truth, royal Gaelic authority, and heroic bravery. The two silver swords denote armed readiness, justice, and defense of domain, while the red field and three silver crescents represent martial fortitude, sacrifice, enlightenment, and hopeful renewal across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a steel naval anchor, signifying steadfast stability, faith, and ocean defense. Below, the motto scroll displays Cuimhnigh ar do gheallamhnacha, translating from Gaelic to "Remember your promises." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms.
