The origin of the name Little
Little is an iconic Scottish Border clan surname (Clan Little) derived from Old English lytel (originally a descriptive nickname for a person of small stature or a younger son). Settling along the Scottish Marches in Dumfriesshire (Meikledale) in the 14th century, the Chiefs of Clan Little were formidable Border Reivers who commanded vast cavalry units in defense of the Scottish realm. Codified early in Scottish charters, the name appears in the 1296 Ragman Rolls (Nicol Little).
The symbolism of the Little coat of arms
Visually striking and geometric, the Little coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white saltire (X-shaped cross) bearing a central red crescent moon. In Scottish heraldry, the black shield denotes wisdom, dignity, and constancy, while the silver saltire represents cross-road guardianship, structural balance, and unyielding defense of clan territory. The red crescent in the center signifies hopeful renewal, enlightenment, and distinction of lineage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden leopard's or cat's head erased, symbolising acute watchfulness, agility, and fierce protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Magnum in parvo, translating to "Much in little." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Little of Meikledale.
