The origin of the name Lincoln

Lincoln is an ancient English habitational noble surname derived from the historic cathedral city of Lincoln in Lincolnshire (originating from Brythonic Lindon, meaning "lake/pool," and Latin Colonia). Established shortly after the 1066 Norman Conquest by Anglo-Norman magnates like Alured de Lincoln, the family held major lordships across Lincolnshire, Dorset, and Somerset. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1086 Domesday Book (Wido de Lincoln).

The symbolism of the Lincoln coat of arms

Commanding and dignified, the Lincoln coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black lion rampant crowned or collared with a golden ducal coronet. In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the black lion rampant represents supreme bravery, deep wisdom, dignity, and unyielding constancy. The golden coronet around the lion's neck denotes royal protection, distinguished service, and noble alignment with the Crown. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of dark and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Lincolnshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Alured de Lincoln (11th Century): Anglo-Norman baron and major landholder recorded in the Domesday Book.
Lady Elizabeth Lincoln (17th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Lincolnshire land rolls.
Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865): Famed 16th President of the United States who led the nation through the American Civil War.
