The origin of the name Leonard

Leonard is an ancient Anglo-Norman patronymic surname derived from the Old Germanic personal name Leonhard (composed of levon, meaning "lion," and hardu, meaning "brave," "hardy," or "strong"). Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Leonard rose to high feudal standing as Barons Dacre and Lords of Belhus in Essex. Holding expansive manorial estates across Kent, Essex, and Sussex, members of the family served as High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and military officers. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Huntingdonshire (John Leonard).
