The origin of the name Leonard

Leonard in Ireland is an ancient Gaelic surname derived from Ó Leannáin (meaning "descendant of Leannán," or "sweetheart/beloved") or as an Anglicised form of Mac Giolla Fhinnéin (descendants of the follower of St. Finnian). Powerful Gaelic septs bearing the name were established in County Fermanagh (where they were hereditary chiefs of the Lough Erne island territories) as well as Galway and Mayo. Recorded extensively in the Annals of Ulster, the family defended their native lordships throughout the medieval era.

The symbolism of the Leonard coat of arms
