The origin of the name Leon
Leon (de León / Ponce de León) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the Kingdom of León in northwestern Spain or the personal name León ("lion"). Originating with the medieval royal dynasty that ruled the Kingdom of León, the House of León expanded across Castile, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, and the Americas during the Reconquista. Playing a central role in Spanish royal history, members served as Viceroys, Governors, and Conquistadors.
The symbolism of the Leon coat of arms
