The surname Lee, along with its numerous historical variants such as Leigh, Lea, Leye, and Legh, originates as a topographic or locational name in Anglo-Saxon and early medieval England. The name is derived from the Old English word lēah, which originally denoted a rough woodland clearing, a glade, or an open space inside a forest. As the English landscape transformed through medieval agricultural expansion and the clearing of primary woodlands, the definition of lēah gradually evolved in Middle English to signify a meadow, an enclosed pasture, or a piece of arable land left fallow.
