Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The Origin of the Lee Name

The surname Lee derives primarily from the Old English word leah, meaning a woodland clearing, meadow, or pasture. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, Anglo-Norman families living on or managing such estates adopted the territorial identifier de Lee or de la Lee, establishing early seats across Cheshire, Buckinghamshire, and Middlesex.
In an Irish context, this specific armorial branch arrived during the 12th-century Anglo-Norman expansion and subsequent land grants, taking root in Munster and Leinster—particularly in counties Waterford, Kilkenny, and Tipperary. While native Gaelic surnames such as Mac Laoidhigh (MacLee) and Ó Laoghaire (O'Leary) were also Anglicized as "Lee," this coat of arms specifically represents the Anglo-Norman armorial family whose presence bridged both England and Ireland over centuries of land administration and military service.

The Symbolism of the Lee Coat of Arms

The white shield: Represents peace, sincerity, and stainless honor.
The engrailed black chevron: Symbolizes protection, faithful service, and the roof of a house or fortress. The scalloped (engrailed) edges traditionally signify land boundaries or defensive fortification.
The three black leopards' heads (Sable): In classical heraldry, the leopard’s head (often blazoned as a panther’s face) represents fierce courage, vigilance, and swift protection of family lands.
The lion with a sword above the shield: Features a black lion rampant holding an upright sword issuing from a coronet, symbolizing readiness in defense, martial valor, and loyalty to a cause.
The notto (Fide et fortitudine): Translates from Latin to "By faith and fortitude," expressing devotion to duty alongside resilience in the face of adversity.

The history of this Lee coat of arms

The earliest physical evidence of this coat of arms (Argent, a chevron engrailed between three leopards' faces Sable) traces back to 15th-century Buckinghamshire, where it was initially used on estate deeds and church monuments by the Lees of Moreton and Hartwell. The shield entered the official royal records during the 1566 Heraldic Visitation of Buckinghamshire, with a lion holding an upright sword—formalized during the Tudor period and re-confirmed in 1634. The arms were introduced to Ireland in the late 16th century through settler lines such as Captain Thomas Lee of County Kildare, after which the design was officially logged in Dublin by the Ulster King of Arms to validate the family’s landed Anglo-Irish branches.

Significant Historical Figures

Sir Thomas Lee of Hartwell (c. 1535–1626): High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and magistrate whose line bore these arms, establishing one of the most prominent landed branches of the family with extensive political ties.
Captain Thomas Lee (1551–1601): An Anglo-Norman military officer and landholder in Ireland who served as Seneschal of O'Byrne's Country in County Kildare. He played a notable role in Elizabethan Irish politics, famously commissioned in a surviving 1594 portrait dressed in traditional Gaelic attire.
Dr. Edward Lee (c. 1482–1544): Scholar, royal chaplain, and Archbishop of York during the reign of King Henry VIII, who served as a key English diplomat across continental Europe.
