The origin of the name Lawrence
Lawrence (Laurence) is an ancient Anglo-Norman patronymic surname derived from the Latin personal name Laurentius (meaning "laurel-crowned" or "victorious"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Lawrence established premier manorial seats across Lancashire (Ashton Hall), Gloucestershire, and Buckinghamshire. Sir Robert Lawrence was knighted by King Richard Cœur de Lion in 1191 for his bravery at the Siege of Acre during the Third Crusade. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (John Laurence).
The symbolism of the Lawrence coat of arms
Visually pure and chivalric, the Lawrence coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central red cross raguly (a cross with jagged, branch-like edges). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity. The red cross raguly represents unyielding Christian faith, knightly sacrifice, and overcoming rugged obstacles through fortitude. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. Below, the motto scroll displays In cruce salus, translating to "Salvation in the cross." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Lancashire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
