The origin of the name Larmour
Larmour (L'Armour / Armour) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and French occupational surname derived from Old French l'armurier (meaning "the armorer" or "maker of coat of mail"). Originating with master craftsmen who forged knightly armor and battle weapons, the lineage established seats in England before branches settled in Ulster (County Antrim and Down) during the 17th century. Recorded in early military and land rolls, the family maintained a proud tradition of civic and martial service.
The symbolism of the Larmour coat of arms
Visually martial and chivalric, the Larmour coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad deep blue chevron bearing three silver stars, set between three blue steel-armored arms (vambraced arms) bent at the elbow. In heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the blue chevron and silver stars denote loyalty, truth, divine guidance, and noble purpose. The three armored arms represent master craftsmanship, martial readiness, and strength in defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a knightly steel helmet in profile surmounted by an upright open hand and a blue feather plume—symbolising chivalric honor, vigilance, and an unblemished pledge of protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Cassis tutissima virtus, translating to "Virtue is the safest helmet." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in British and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
