The origin of the name Lara

Lara is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the manor and village of Lara de los Infantes in Burgos, Castile. The House of Lara was one of the four premier royal and grandee dynasties of medieval Spain, ruling vast lordships as Counts of Lara, Lords of Biscay, and Regents of Castile. Playing a dominant role in medieval Iberian history, members of the lineage served as royal stewards, admirals, and military commanders throughout the Reconquista.

The symbolism of the Lara coat of arms

Rich in Iberian grandee tradition, the Lara coat of arms features a red shield charged with two golden and black checkered cauldrons (calderas) issuing green serpents from their sides, arranged vertically in pale. In Spanish heraldry, the red field symbolises martial fortitude and sacrifice, while the checkered cauldrons denote grand manorial hospitality, wealth, and military command. The green serpents emerging from the cauldrons signify strategic wisdom, healing, and the defeat of formidable enemies. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and gold feathers, representing noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Doña María de Lara (13th Century): Spanish noblewoman and benefactor recorded in Castilian charters.
