The origin of the name Lane

Lane is an ancient English topographic surname derived from Old English lanu (referring to an ancestor residing near a prominent rural lane or pathway). Establishing influential manorial seats across Staffordshire (Bentley Hall), Northamptonshire, and Devon following the Norman Conquest, the family gained international fame during the English Civil War when Jane Lane courageously helped King Charles II escape after the Battle of Worcester. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Hugh de la Lane).

The symbolism of the Lane coat of arms

Commanding and bold, the Lane coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central red lion rampant, set within a black border (orle/bordure). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity and peace, while the red lion rampant represents heroic courage, martial valour, and unyielding defense of the crown. The black border denotes deep wisdom, constancy, and territorial protection. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of feathers, representing noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Staffordshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Historical figures

Sir Richard Lane (1584–1650): Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to King Charles I.
Jane Lane / Lady Fisher (1626–1689): Celebrated English heroine who saved King Charles II by riding with him disguised as her servant.
Sir Philip Lane (18th Century): Recorded magistrate and landowner in Staffordshire charters.
