The origin of the name Lambert
Lambert is an ancient Germanic personal name and surname derived from Land-berht (composed of land, meaning "land" or "territory," and berht, meaning "bright" or "famous"). Introduced to England and Scotland by Flemish and Norman knights following the 1066 Conquest, the family established prominent manorial seats across Yorkshire (Calverley), Norfolk, and Surrey. Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Norfolk (Sir John Lambert).
The symbolism of the Lambert coat of arms
Visually pure and sacred, the Lambert coat of arms features a red shield charged with an argent / silver or white chevron set between three silver Paschal Lambs (Agnus Dei), each holding a silver banner bearing a red St. George's cross (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial courage and sacrifice, while the silver chevron denotes architectural protection and knightly sashes of honor. The three Paschal Lambs represent divine innocence, unyielding faith, peace, and spiritual victory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising light and noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Ut quocunque paratus, translating to "Prepared for whatever may happen." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
