The origin of the Lacy name
The surname Lacy (also seen as de Lacy or Lacey) originates from Norman French heritage, linked to the village of Lassy in Normandy, France. Following the Norman Conquest of England, the name was introduced to Britain by followers of William the Conqueror, most notably the influential noble family led by Ilbert de Lacy. Hugh de Lacy, who arrived in Ireland around 1172, was granted the Lordship of Meath by Henry II of England, establishing him as one of the most powerful Norman lords in Ireland during that era.
The symbolism of the Lacy coat of arms
The purple lion broadcasts their fierce courage and elite noble status, while the golden eagle represents ambition, sharp alertness, and unbreakable family loyalty. The motto "Meritis Augentur Honores" means "Honors are increased by merit."
