The origin of the name Knight
Knight stems from the Old English cniht, originally meaning "military retainer," "armored horseman," or "free feudal servant." Following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the term evolved into an aristocratic title bestowed upon landholders bound to perform knight-service for the Crown. Early family seats were established across Berkshire, Devon, Sussex, and Hampshire, with early ancestral records appearing in the 1086 Domesday Book under Godefridus Cniht, as well as the 1273 Hundred Rolls during the reign of King Edward I.
The symbolism of the Knight coat of arms
The Knight coat of arms features a shield filled with vertical paly stripes of argent (silver) and gules (red), set within an engrailed (scalloped) azure (blue) border. In heraldry, argent signifies peace and purity, gules denotes warrior fortitude, and azure represents truth and steadfast loyalty.
The vertical paly pattern symbolizes military palisades and fortress defense, while the engrailed blue bordure signifies protective boundaries, honor, and vigilance in guarding family domains.
Surmounting the shield, the crest features a golden eagle displayed (wings outstretched) positioned between two red lance banners, resting upon a coronet. Framed by flowing blue and silver mantling, this ancient blazon is recorded in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général and official English Heralds' Visitations.
