Kenny is an honored Irish surname of ancient Gaelic origin, deriving from Ó Cionnaith or Mac Cionnaith (meaning "descendant of Cionaodh," a personal name composed of elements signifying "born of fire" or "peaceful"). Prominent septs of the lineage established historical territories across Galway (within the kingdom of Uí Maine), Offaly, Roscommon, and Tyrone. Early medieval annals record Kenny chieftains as patrons of monastic learning and steadfast defenders of their ancestral lands.
The symbolism of the Kenny coat of arms
The Kenny coat of arms features a shield divided vertically per pale in or (gold) and azure (blue), charged with a central fleur-de-lis surrounded by three crescents, all strikingly counterchanged. In classical heraldry, gold represents noble intellect, generosity, and elevation of mind, while blue signifies truth, loyalty, and steadfast devotion.
The central fleur-de-lis symbolizes purity, light, and royal favor, while the three crescents represent enlightened hope, elevated honor, and growth across generations.
