The origin of the name Keller
Keller is an ancient Germanic and Swiss occupational surname derived from Middle High German kellnære (meaning "cellarer," "steward," or "chief financial treasurer" of a manorial estate or monastery). Originating during the early Middle Ages across Bavaria, Switzerland (Zurich), and Swabia, individuals holding this status were responsible for managing castle provisions and financial accounts. Codified early in municipal records, the name appears in 1260 Zurich charters (Johannes Keller).
The symbolism of the Keller coat of arms
Visually striking and symbolic, the Keller coat of arms features a red shield charged with a central diagonal argent / silver or white key erect. In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial fortitude, sacrifice, and courage, while the silver key serves as an emblem of trust, guardianship, stewardship, high authority, and the power to unlock wisdom and preserve family treasures. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and silver feathers, representing noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in central European patrician rolls and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
