The origin of the name Keane
Keane (O'Keane) is a historic Gaelic Irish surname of dual sept origin: deriving from Ó Catháin (O'Cahan, powerful lords of Limavady in Ulster) or Ó Céin (descendants of Cian, centered in County Waterford and Galway). Meaning "battle warrior" or "enduring," the family produced hereditary chieftains, military commanders, and High Sheriffs across Connacht and Munster. Recorded in early Irish land inquisitions, the House of Keane established major landed seats at Cappoquin House (County Waterford).
The symbolism of the Keane coat of arms
Visually complex and rich in Gaelic lore, the Keane coat of arms features a field partitioned with multiple iconic charges: the upper section displays a deep blue field bearing a silver horse rampant, a silver hand on a crescent, a silver lion, and three silver stars; the middle section features three silver salamanders on red, a central inescutcheon bearing a red Celtic cross on a pedestal, and an oak tree with exposed roots on white; the base displays a silver salmon swimming on blue. In heraldry, the horse denotes swift nobility, the hand and crescent represent ancestral pledges, the lion symbolises heroic courage, and the three stars signify divine guidance. The three salamanders represent resilience through trial, the Celtic cross denotes sacred faith, the rooted oak tree symbolises enduring wisdom, and the silver salmon represents ancient Irish knowledge (Éigne) and water lordship. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a seated leopard (cat-a-mountain), symbolising acute alertness and agility. Below, the motto scroll displays Felis semulcta mitis, translating to "The stroked cat is gentle." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms for Keane of Cappoquin.
