The origin of the name Kavanaugh
Kavanaugh is the prominent international and Anglicised spelling variant of the royal Gaelic Irish surname Kavanagh (Caomhánach). Originating in Leinster with Domhnall Caomhánach, son of King Dermot MacMurrough of Leinster, the lineage held ancestral strongholds across Wexford, Carlow, and Kilkenny. During the 18th and 19th centuries, members of the family emigrated widely to North America, preserving their royal Irish heritage under the Kavanaugh spelling.
The symbolism of the Kavanaugh coat of arms
Sharing the exact ancestral armorial bearings of the royal Gaelic Kavanagh lineage, the Kavanaugh coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a red lion passant guardant above two red crescents in base. In classical Irish heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity and judicial purity, while the red lion symbolises heroic bravery and sovereign Leinster leadership. The two red crescents denote enlightenment, hopeful renewal, and continuous family honor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden wheat garb issuing from a red crescent, representing peace, hospitality, and rich harvests. Below, the motto scroll displays Síocháin agus fairsínge, translating to "Peace and plenty." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and catalogued in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory.
