The origin of the name Kavanagh
Kavanagh (Cavanagh) is one of the most famous royal Gaelic Irish clan surnames, derived from Caomhánach (meaning "belonging to St. Caomhán" or "comely/gentle"). The clan originated with Domhnall Caomhánach (d. 1175), son of Diarmait Mac Murchada (Dermot MacMurrough), King of Leinster. Ruling extensive ancestral territories across Carlow, Wexford, and Kilkenny as Kings of Leinster and Chieftains of the MacMurrough Kavanagh dynasty, the family defended their sovereign lands for centuries, recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The symbolism of the Kavanagh coat of arms
Commanding and royal, the Kavanagh coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central walking red lion (lion passant guardant) set above two red crescents in base. In Gaelic heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished honor, while the red lion represents supreme courage, martial valour, and royal Leinster authority. The two red crescents signify enlightenment, hopeful renewal, and noble expansion across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden sheaf of wheat (garb) issuing out of a red crescent, symbolising agricultural abundance, hospitality, and rising prosperity. Below, the motto scroll displays Síocháin agus fairsínge, translating from Irish Gaelic to "Peace and plenty." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
