The origin of the name Jensen
Jensen is an ancient Scandinavian patronymic surname meaning "son of Jens" (the Nordic form of Johannes / John, derived from Hebrew Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious"). Widespread across Denmark, Norway, and Schleswig-Holstein, families bearing the Jensen name served as patrician merchants, naval commanders, and civic magistrates throughout Northern Europe.
The symbolism of the Jensen coat of arms
Visually bold and geometric, the Jensen coat of arms features a field divided into a checkered pattern (chequy) of red and argent / silver or white. In classical heraldry, the contrast of red and silver symbolises martial fortitude, sacrifice, sincerity, and unblemished honor. The bold checkered division represents strategic wisdom, architectural stability, and unity of domain across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of feathers, representing noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Nordic patrician registers and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
