The origin of the name Jennings
Jennings is an ancient English and Anglo-Irish patronymic surname derived from Jenin (a medieval French diminutive of John, meaning "God is gracious"). Establishing prominent manorial seats across Yorkshire, Warwickshire (Erbury), and Somerset following the 1066 Norman Conquest, branches of the family also settled in Connacht (Galway and Mayo, Ireland) during the 16th century, where they became Gaelicised as MacJonin. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Somerset (Janyn de Erbury).
The symbolism of the Jennings coat of arms
Commanding and regal, the Jennings coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a red lion rampant holding a silver battle-axe, set beneath a deep blue upper section (chief) bearing three golden crowns. In heraldry, the silver field denotes sincerity and peace, while the red lion rampant holding a battle-axe symbolises supreme courage, heroic leadership, and armed defense of clan lands. The blue chief and three golden crowns represent unyielding royal allegiance, high honor, and princely favor. Below, the motto scroll displays Ung Roy, Ung Foy, Ung Loy, translating from French to "One King, One Faith, One Law." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Warwickshire and registered in the Ulster Office of Arms.
