The origin of the name Jameson

Jameson (Jamieson) is an iconic Scottish clan surname (Clan Gunn and Clan MacThomas septs) meaning "son of James." Establishing early seats across Aberdeenshire, Bute, and Ayrshire, the family served as royal magistrates and merchant governors. In 1780, Scottish-born John Jameson established the world-famous Jameson Distillery in Dublin, cementing the family name in global industrial history.

The symbolism of the Jameson coat of arms

Rich in maritime and chivalric imagery, the Jameson coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a golden saltire (X-shaped cross) set between three golden sailing ships (lymphads/galleys) in chief and flanks, and a golden hunting horn (buglehorn) in base. In Scottish heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden saltire represents resolution and chivalric balance. The three golden sailing ships denote maritime command, sea voyages, and commercial exploration, while the golden hunting horn signifies forestry alertness and readiness for defense. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a wooden sailing ship, reinforcing maritime heritage. Below, the motto scroll displays Sine metu, translating to "Without fear." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and recorded in Burke's Landed Gentry.
