The origin of the name Jacobs
Jacobs (Jacobson) is an ancient English, Dutch, and North German patronymic surname meaning "son of Jacob" (derived from the biblical Hebrew personal name Ya'akov, meaning "supplanter" or "holder of the heel"). Introduced to Britain following the Norman Conquest and widespread across the Low Countries, families bearing the name established respected manorial seats in Cambridgeshire, Kent, and Zeeland. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Jordan Jacob).
The symbolism of the Jacobs coat of arms
Visually pure and sacred, the Jacobs coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central red cross flory (a cross with fleur-de-lis arm ends). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity. The central red cross flory represents unyielding Christian faith, chivalric virtue, sacrifice, and spiritual nobility. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Kent and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Sarah Jacobs (19th Century): Gentlewoman and community benefactor recorded in county rolls.
