The personal name Jack developed during the medieval period as a diminutive form of John, which is derived from the ancient Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh has been gracious" or "God's gift." The personal name spread rapidly across the British Isles following the twelfth-century return of the Crusaders from the Holy Land. The surname stabilized as a permanent, hereditary family designation between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with early official recordings appearing in documents such as the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire.
