The personal name Jack developed during the medieval period as a diminutive form of John, which is derived from the ancient Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh has been gracious" or "God's gift." The personal name spread rapidly across the British Isles following the twelfth-century return of the Crusaders from the Holy Land. The same coat of arms and motto also appears in Burke's General Armory for the branch of Richard Jackson, Esq., of Preston in Lancaster.
