The origin of the name Jackson
The surname Jackson is a patronymic name of English origin, translating literally to "the son of Jack." The personal name Jack developed during the medieval period as a diminutive form of John, which is derived from the ancient Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh has been gracious" or "God's gift." The personal name spread rapidly across the British Isles following the twelfth-century return of the Crusaders from the Holy Land. The surname stabilized as a permanent, hereditary family designation between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with early official recordings appearing in documents such as the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the Jackson coat of arms
The Shield Color: The silver or white background (argent) traditionally signifies peace, sincerity, and purity of purpose.
The Chevron: The central black structural band (sable) represents a roof-rafter or ridge-beam. In heraldic tradition, it denotes protection, architectural strength, and the successful completion of a significant work of faithful service.
The Three Eagle Heads: Positioned two in chief and one in base, are three eagle heads erased (showing a jagged edge at the neck) rendered in blue (azure) with red tongues. They traditionally symbolize sharp vision, high-minded pursuits, and military alertness.
The Three Cinquefoils: The three gold (or) five-leafed floral charges placed directly on the black chevron represent hope, honor, and joy.
The Crest: A white horse to signify readiness, freedom, and a warrior's spirit.
The Motto: Malo mori quam foedari, a traditional Latin phrase that translates directly to English as "Death rather than dishonour".
Historical records and earliest evidence of creation
The Earliest Recording (1563): This specific shield configuration was officially recorded and confirmed during the 1563 Heraldic Visitation of Yorkshire. Conducted by William Flower, Norroy King of Arms, this visitation formally cataloged the arms for the family of Jackson of Gatenby, Bedale, Yorkshire. The same coat of arms and motto also appears in Burke's General Armory for the branch of Richard Jackson, Esq., of Preston in Lancaster.
