The origin of the name Irwin
Irwin (Irvine / Irving) is an ancient Scottish clan surname (Clan Irvine) derived from the lands and River Irvine in Ayrshire, or from the Old English personal name Eoforwine (meaning "boar-friend"). Granted the Forest of Drum in Aberdeenshire by King Robert the Bruce in 1323, the Lairds of Drum built Drum Castle and served as Armor Bearers to the Scottish Crown. Branches of the clan later settled prominently across Ulster (Fermanagh and Tyrone) during the 17th century.
The symbolism of the Irwin coat of arms
Commanding and civic, the Irwin coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three green holly leaves with red berries (two in chief, one in base), set around a central red mural crown or embattled structure. In heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the three green holly leaves with red berries represent eternal life, truth, and protection against trial. The central red mural crown denotes civic defense, fortress victory, and heroic protection of clan lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays two crossed green thistles with purple blossoms behind green holly sprigs, symbolising untamed Scottish fortitude and royal allegiance. Below, the motto scroll displays Candide et constanter, translating to "Candidly and constantly." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Irvine of Drum and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
