The origin of the name Ingram
Ingram is an ancient Anglo-Norman personal name and surname derived from the Old Germanic personal name Ingelram or Enguerrand (composed of Ing, a Germanic deity, and ramn, meaning "raven"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Ingram established influential seats across Yorkshire (Temple Newsam), Sussex, and Northumberland, eventually rising to the peerage as Viscounts Irwin. Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (John Ingelram).
The symbolism of the Ingram coat of arms
Visually pure and aristocratic, the Ingram coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield powdered with black ermine spots, charged with a broad central red horizontal band (fess) bearing three golden escallop shells. In classical heraldry, the silver shield with ermine spots symbolises sincerity, unblemished honor, and judicial purity, while the red fess represents knightly sashes, fortitude, and sacrifice. The three golden escallop shells denote sacred pilgrimage, honorable journeys, and architectural grace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing silver rooster (cock)—an emblem of acute vigilance, early morning alertness, and courageous spirit. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
