The origin of the name Hunter

Hunter is an iconic Scottish clan surname (Clan Hunter / Clann Hunter) derived from Old English hunte and Old French veneur ("royal huntsman"). Granted ancestral lands at Hunterston (Ayrshire) in the 12th century by King David I, the Chiefs of Clan Hunter served as Hereditary Keepers of the Royal Forests of Cumbraes. Holding Hunterston Castle for over 800 years, the clan played pivotal roles in Scottish border security and naval defense.

The symbolism of the Hunter coat of arms

Visually luminous and canting, the Hunter coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with three green hunting horns tied with red ribbons (two in chief, one in base). In Scottish heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity and elevation of mind, while the three green hunting horns serve as a famous canting emblem (Hunter) representing royal forestry service, forest guardianship, and high alertness. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a greyhound coursing (running) wearing a golden crown around its neck—symbolising swift vigilance, royal favor, and steadfast loyalty in pursuit of noble duty. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) for Hunter of Hunterston.

Historical figures

Lady Mary Hunter (18th Century): Recorded noblewoman and philanthropist in Scottish estate rolls.
William Hunter (1718–1783) & John Hunter (1728–1793): World-renowned Scottish physicians, anatomists, and founders of modern scientific surgery.
