The origin of the name Hunt
Hunt is an ancient English occupational and status surname derived from Old English hunta (meaning "hunter" or "keeper of the chase"). Essential to medieval manorial estates and royal forests, master hunters managed game reserves and organized lordly hunts. Prominent lineages established ancestral seats across Shropshire (Boreatton), Devon, and Kent following the 1066 Norman Conquest. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Ralph le Hunt). While originating in Shropshire, branches of this English Hunt family established themselves in Ireland during the 17th century (settling prominently in Counties Limerick, Tipperary, and Dublin). Related entries and genealogical trees for these Hunt branches were registered with the Office of the Ulster King of Arms (whose historic manuscripts are curated today within the National Library of Ireland).
The symbolism of the Hunt coat of arms
Visually striking and geometric, the Hunt coat of arms features a shield divided per saltire (diagonally in an X-pattern) counterchanged in black and argent / silver or white. In classical heraldry, the contrast of black and silver symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, constancy, and judicial purity. The bold per saltire division represents cross-road guardianship, structural balance, and unyielding protection of boundaries under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of feathers, representing noble elevation, light, and high honor across generations. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Shropshire and Devon, registered in the Ulster Office of Arms, and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
