The origin of the name Hughes

Hughes is an ancient Welsh patronymic surname meaning "son of Hugh" (derived from Germanic Hugo, meaning "mind," "heart," or "intellect"). In Wales, the name was widely adopted during the 15th and 16th centuries as traditional Welsh patronymic naming practices (ap Hugh) transitioned into fixed family surnames. The premier noble branch, the House of Hughes of Gwerclas and Kymmer-yn-Edeirnion (Merionethshire), traces direct descent from Owain Brogyntyn, Lord of Edeirnion, and the medieval sovereign Princes of Powys Fadog.

The symbolism of the Hughes coat of arms

Commanding and ancient, the Hughes coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black lion rampant. In classical Welsh heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the black lion rampant represents supreme bravery, heroic fortitude, and royal princely authority over Welsh domains. Below, the motto scroll displays Kymmer-yn Lydeirnon (Kymmer-yn-Edeirnion), honoring the ancient baronial seat of the lineage in Merionethshire. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s 16th-century Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Sir Bernard Burke’s Landed Gentry and General Armory.
