Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Horan

Horan (O'Horan) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó hÓráin (from Ó hUdhrain, stemming from odhar, meaning "pale-faced" or "dun-coloured"). The Ó hÓráin sept were dynastic landholders in the ancient territory of Hy-Many (County Galway and County Mayo). Following the land re-allocations of the 1650s, 17th-century state records under the Act of Settlement confirm grants of land to senior heads of the Horan lineage in the Galway parishes of Aughrim, Clontuskert, and Ahascragh.

The symbolism of the Horan coat of arms

Commanding and noble, the Horan coat of arms features a vibrant green (vert) shield charged with three golden lions rampant (two in chief, one in base). In Gaelic heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in Irish soil, while the three golden lions represent heroic bravery, noble leadership, and royal Gaelic authority. These arms are explicitly documented in Roger O'Ferrall’s 1709 genealogical manuscript Linea Antiqua, preserved in the official transcriptions of Ulster King of Arms, Sir William Betham (Vert three lions rampant two and one Or), and catalogued in Sir Bernard Burke’s The General Armory.

Historical figures

Giolla Ó hÓráin (14th Century): Gaelic scholar and cleric recorded in Connacht monastic records.
Margaret Horan (17th Century): Recorded landowner in Galway land inquisitions under the Act of Settlement.
Edward Horan (1817–1875): Irish-born Canadian prelate and Bishop of Kingston.
