Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Homes

Homes (Home / Hume) is an iconic Scottish Border clan surname (Clan Home) derived from the lands of Home in Berwickshire. Descended from the ancient Anglo-Saxon Earls of Dunbar and Northumbria, the family held premier Border strongholds including Home Castle and Fast Castle. As Lords and Earls of Home, they served as Great Chamberlains of Scotland and Hereditary Wardens of the Eastern Marches, defending the Scottish border across centuries.

The symbolism of the Homes coat of arms

Visually bold and noble, the Homes coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central argent / silver or white lion rampant. In Scottish heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and ancient land tenure, while the silver lion rampant represents supreme bravery, heroism, and martial leadership in defense of the Scottish Marches. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver lion standing upon a red cap of maintenance (chapeau), signifying noble dignity, judicial authority, and steadfast loyalty. Below, the motto scroll displays True to the end. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) for the Earls of Home.

Historical figures

Alexander Home, 1st Lord Home (d. 1490): Great Chamberlain of Scotland and Warden of the Marches.
Lady Margaret Home (16th Century): Scottish noblewoman recorded in Berwickshire land charters.
David Home of Godscroft (1558–1629): Celebrated Scottish historian, poet, and political theorist.
