The origin of the name Holt
Holt is an ancient English topographic surname derived from Old English holt (meaning "grove of trees" or "small wood"). Prominent lineages established influential manorial estates across Lancashire (Gristlehurst), Warwickshire (Aston Hall), and Cheshire following the 1066 Norman Conquest, where members served as High Sheriffs, judges, and estate managers. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Hugh de la Holte).
The symbolism of the Holt coat of arms
Visually balanced and sacred, the Holt coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with two golden horizontal bars (fesses/bars), surmounted in chief by a golden cross formy (cross pattée). In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield represents loyalty and faith, while the golden horizontal bars denote knightly sashes of honour, structural balance, and integrity. The golden cross in chief symbolises unyielding Christian devotion and divine blessing over family lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red squirrel seated on a wreath, holding a golden acorn in its paws—an emblem of industrious foresight, thrift, and forest lordship. Below, the motto scroll displays Exaltavit humiles, translating to "He has exalted the humble." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Lancashire and Warwickshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
