The origin of the name Holland
Holland is an ancient English habitational noble surname derived from Holland in Lincolnshire, Lancashire (Upholland), or Essex. The House of Holland rose to supreme royal aristocracy during the 14th century as Earls of Kent and Dukes of Exeter, intermarrying directly with the Plantagenet royal family and serving as military commanders during the Hundred Years' War. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Robert de Hoyland).
The symbolism of the Holland coat of arms
Regal and protective, the Holland coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central walking argent / silver or white lion rampant, set within an orb of eight silver fleurs-de-lis. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and devotion, while the central silver lion represents supreme bravery, heroism, and noble leadership. The eight surrounding silver fleurs-de-lis denote royal favor, grace, and purity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing black wolf or hound, signifying fierce alertness, loyalty, and unyielding protection of domain. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Lancashire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
