The origin of the name Hoffman
Hoffman (Hofmann / Hoffmann) is an ancient Germanic and Dutch status surname derived from Middle High German hofman (composed of hof, meaning "farm" or "manorial estate," and man, meaning "manager" or "steward"). Originally assumed by estate managers, court stewards, and independent landholders, the lineage established influential seats across Silesia, Saxony, Bavaria, and the Low Countries during the early Middle Ages.
The symbolism of the Hoffman coat of arms
Serene and forest-inspired, the Hoffman coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a green grassy mount in base, out of which grow three green pine or fir trees. In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the three green pine trees on a grassy mount represent vitality, forest stewardship, continuous growth, and deep roots in ancestral soil. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing red rooster (cock), an emblem of acute vigilance, early morning alertness, and courageous spirit. Below, the motto scroll displays Carpe diem, translating to "Seize the day." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in central European patrician registers and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
