The origin of the name Hicks
Hicks (Hick / Hix) is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Hick" (a popular medieval pet form of Richard, derived from Germanic Ricard, meaning "powerful ruler"). Originating in Gloucestershire (Beverston Castle) and London following the Norman Conquest, the House of Hicks rose to high aristocracy as Viscounts Campden and Baronets of Witcombe, producing Lord Mayors, judges, and parliamentary leaders. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1327 Subsidy Rolls of Yorkshire (Richard Hekke).
The symbolism of the Hicks coat of arms
Visually elegant, the Hicks coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad golden wavy horizontal band (fess) set between three golden fleurs-de-lis (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour and sacrifice, while the wavy golden fess denotes knightly sashes of honour, architectural protection, and ocean/river voyages. The three golden fleurs-de-lis represent royal favor, purity, and noble expansion. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a buck's (stag's) head erased, signifying forest lordship and peaceful dignity. Below, the motto scroll displays Tout bien ou rein, translating from French to "All good or nothing." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
